What a work Christmas party costs in Sydney: per-head prices for 6 formats
You’ve been handed the budget. Here’s what each type of party really costs per head, what pushes the price up, and how to stretch every dollar.
Most people planning a work Christmas party get two questions from the boss. How much? And is it worth it?
This guide answers the first one with real numbers. Every price below is a published starting price from Anderson Events as at October 2026. Your final quote depends on group size, venue, food and extras.
Per-head prices for 6 formats
| Format | From (per person) | Group size | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Virtual or hybrid celebration | $39 | Any | Remote and interstate staff |
| Trivia and quiz challenge | $45 | 10 to 300 | Teams who prefer brains over sweat |
| Christmas sports carnival | $55 | 10 to 500 | Mixed, active teams |
| Escape room challenge | $55 | Small groups | Small teams and leaders |
| Creative workshop | $59 | Small to medium | Hands-on teams |
| Amazing Race | $65 | 20 to 300 | Teams who like to explore |
These cover the activity, the gear and the people who run it. Food and drinks sit on top.
What adds to the bill
The activity is often the smallest line. These extras move the total most.
- Catering. BBQ, grazing tables, salad bars and grab-and-go lunches. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, halal and kosher options are all available.
- Drinks. A licensed bar needs at least 20 days’ notice for approval. Trading runs 10am to midnight.
- Prizes and awards. Trophies and medals make the day feel real.
- MC and commentary. A host keeps energy high and the schedule on time.
- Photos. Great for LinkedIn posts and next year’s invite.
- Team uniforms and live leaderboards. Nice extras for competitive crews.
A daytime event usually costs less than a night out. You skip late venue fees and a big bar tab, and more people come.
Three sample budgets
These are simple examples using starting prices. They show how the numbers stack up before food and drinks.
| Team | Format | Activity cost | Plus |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 people | Trivia and quiz | 20 x $45 = $900 | Grazing table, soft drinks |
| 50 people | Christmas sports carnival | 50 x $55 = $2,750 | BBQ, prizes, photos |
| 100 people | Amazing Race | 100 x $65 = $6,500 | Catering, MC, licensed bar |

Cheaper ways to throw a great party
- Go daytime. Lunch to late afternoon is easier on the budget and on Monday morning.
- Pick a weekday. Fridays in December are the most popular days.
- Book early. More choice of dates and venues means more room to negotiate.
- Hire a venue and run it yourselves. If you have a keen organiser, you can hire indoor courts by the hour. Camellia Indoor Sports Centre near Parramatta has courts from $120 an hour.
- Combine events. Turn your end of year party into an awards day too. One event, two jobs done.
Is it worth the money?
A good party is one of the few times a whole company is in one place. People meet colleagues they only know from email. New starters feel part of the team. And everyone ends the year on a high.
The trick is to spend on what people remember. That’s rarely the canapés. It’s the relay they nearly won, the award they didn’t expect, and the photo of the CEO in a sack race.

How much should we budget per person for a work Christmas party?
For an activity-based party in Sydney, start with $45 to $65 per person for the activity. Add food, drinks and extras on top. A daytime sports carnival with a BBQ and prizes is often one of the best-value options for groups of 30 or more.
What is the cheapest work Christmas party idea?
A trivia and quiz afternoon is one of the most affordable formats, starting from $45 per person. A picnic with lawn games is cheaper still if someone on your team runs it. Daytime events on a weekday also help keep costs down.
Do Christmas party prices include food and drinks?
No. Published starting prices cover the activity, equipment and staff. Catering, a licensed bar, prizes, an MC and photography are quoted separately so you only pay for what you want.
