Left it late? Work Christmas parties you can still book in December

It’s December. The boss just asked about the Christmas party. Deep breath. You still have options, and some of them are better than the ones you missed.

Every year, plenty of teams book their party in the last few weeks. It happens. Budgets get signed off late. People leave. Projects run over.

Here’s how to pull together a great party fast, without paying a premium for panic.

What’s still realistic with 1 to 3 weeks

FormatQuick to set up?Why it works late
Trivia and quiz challengeYesRuns in one room, no big equipment
Games Night InYesGiant games and card games, flexible venues
Christmas sports carnivalUsuallyOutdoor parks are easier to find than function rooms
Amazing RaceUsuallyRuns through public spaces with checkpoints
Escape roomDependsLimited by room bookings

Formats that use parks or flexible spaces are easier to book late than restaurants and function rooms.

What you may need to let go of

  • A licensed bar. Licensed events need at least 20 days’ notice for approval. If you’re inside that window, plan an alcohol-free activity and move to a nearby bar afterwards.
  • A Friday. Fridays go first. A Tuesday to Thursday afternoon is far easier to get.
  • One exact venue. Stay flexible on location and you’ll have far more choice.
The good news
Alcohol-free daytime events often get better turnout anyway. Parents, carers and non-drinkers all come, and people actually talk.

Too late for December? Try a new year kick-off

If December is truly full, flip it. A January or February kick-off event is easier to book, cheaper and gives the team a lift when they need it most.

  • Same formats: sports carnival, Amazing Race, trivia
  • More date choice and fewer clashes
  • A fresh start message for the year ahead

Teams in Western Sydney

If your office is in Parramatta or nearby, an indoor venue takes weather out of the equation. Camellia Indoor Sports Centre has six indoor courts, function rooms and a cafe, with free parking.

FAQs

Can I still book a work Christmas party in December?

Yes. Activity-based parties like trivia, sports carnivals and Amazing Races are often easier to book late than restaurants. Stay flexible on the day of the week and the exact location, and send a few date options when you enquire.

How much notice do you need for a licensed Christmas party?

Licensed events need at least 20 days’ notice for approval. If your date is closer than that, run an alcohol-free activity and suggest an optional bar afterwards. Many teams find the day works just as well.

What if every December date is taken?

Run a new year kick-off event in January or February instead. It’s easier to book, often cheaper, and gives the team a boost at the start of the year. The same formats work well.
